Weekly Update: May 7th -11th

MATH:
Last week, we wrapped up our learning on fractions. We displayed our learning and shared it on seesaw. To celebrate our learning, we made our own pizzas. First we voted on our favorite toppings and organised our thinking into tally charts and bar graphs. Once that was done...we could work out how many pizzas we needed to make and how they should be partitioned. It was delicious fun!

SOLVING REAL PROBLEMS:
Ms Karyn gave us a challenge this week in math. We were shown this problem below and had to problem solve to find the answer. There was a lot of strategic thinking going on!

UOI
It was an incredible week of learning as children inquired into endangered Cambodian animals. They researched, made notes, discussed ideas, wrote persuasively and created displays. They adored collaborating with their peers to create a back wall display that showed their understanding of some of the reasons animals here are at risk...and what positive action can be taken to help them.

On Friday we were incredibly lucky to have a trip to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife rescue centre. It was wonderful to get up close with many of the animals we had been researching and see what positive action was being taken to keep these animals protected and safe.

Weekly Update: April 30 - May 4th

FIELD TRIP - WE HAVE AN UPCOMING TRIP TO PHNOM TAMOU ZOO.

Please check your email for further details

This week, we inquired into many of the endangered animals in Cambodia. Many of these we had never heard of! We sorted them...learned their names, and in reading and lab times began to research these animals further.

On Tuesday, Plastic free Cambodia came to talk with us about our plastic use in this country and how we can make an impact by taking small actions. We learned that the 5 plastic enemies are: Straws, plastic bottles, styrofoam containers, single use coffee cups, and plastic bags. We are encouraged to avoid using these items altogether. You are encouraged to participate in the 'Plastic free July' challenge.

On Wednesday, we had two more guest speakers. Free the Bears came and visited and told us about why these animals are endangered and how the organization are helping.

We also had some ex students from Liger come and talk with us about the involvement they had in producing their stunning book on Cambodian wildlife.

In math, we worked on our fraction pizzas and solved simple mathematical problems as part of the learning process.

Ms Karyn was away on Thursday and Friday on professional Development in Bangkok...because you are never too old to learn something new!

We were lucky to have Petra working with our class for the two days she was absent. On Friday...some of the boys in our class organized a Friday Funky Funday for elementary students to enjoy. They had tattoos, mask making, paper origami (fortune tellers) and paper plane making. Each student led an activity and from all accounts it was a great success! Well done boys!

Weekly Update: 23rd - 27th March

This week we began our final unit of inquiry for the year 'Sharing The Planet'.

Our objective for the unit are to understand how;

'Human actions can preserve or endanger animal life'

Key Concepts:
Connection, Responsibility, Causation

Related Concepts:
Conservation, Sustainability

Lines of Inquiry:

The responsibilities humans have for the survival of other species
The reasons animals become endangered or extinct

The connection between human actions and endangered animal life

Learner Profile:
Caring and Principled

Attitudes:
Respect and Integrity

ATLs:
Thinking: Comprehension, Acquisition of knowledge, Evaluation
Self-management:

Time Management

We began the week with and Earth day assembly which was the perfect provocation for our unit. It got us thinking about the impact our plastic use has on our environment and the living creatures in it. We looked at the 6 r's that were being focussed on the Earth day;

Two of our reading groups inquired into what these meant and shared our understandings with the rest of the class.

The Earth Day Assembly was led and organised by students in our Environmental Action Committee.

Later that day, we looked at our central idea and came up with our own sentences clearly describing our understandings of this. We shared these with each other.

We got to try an unusual new fruit! On Clement's trip to New Zealand in the break, he managed to sneak a bag of feijoas into his suitcase for Ms Karyn. It is her favourite Kiwi fruit. We all had a taste and most of us couldn't decide what it tasted like...pineapple? Sour papaya? Banana with lime? Most of us agreed it was delicious!

We also celebrated Anders birthday with delicious homemade sweet rolls. Happy birthday Anders!

To get us thinking more about our unit, the teacher gave us a collection of powerful images designed get us feeling wondering and reacting. We walked around the posters and added our ideas under 3 headings;
I see...
I think...
I wonder...

As our unit develops we will add information that shows how how our thinking and understandings have changed.

In math we got stuck into fractions and reviewed our knowledge of shapes and time.

We also had a ton of fun reviewing our understanding of current learning through songs, revision relays and online quizzes on Kahoot.

Kahoot online quiz.

Singing to reinforce our understanding of shapes.

A math revision relay.

It's been another fabulous week of learning!

Weekly Update - April 9th-13th

We had a fabulous week before khmer New Year. We completed our final art works and wrote responses that clearly explained our art form and connection to the work. We reflected on our learning and referred back to the creative cycle and our success criteria. We exhibited our work and enjoyed sharing our ideas and journals with others.

We loved sharing our learning at the student led conferences. Students selected the learning they wished to share, read stories, explained mathematical understandings, writing samples and unit of inquiry work.

They were confident and articulate!

Many thanks to the students and parents for taking this time to share, explain, question and engage with each-other.

We celebrated Khmer New Year by learning about the festivities and playing some traditional games. Thank you to our Teacher assistants for organising a wonderful session full of interesting activities and fun.

The week ended with assembly.. They Early Years students gave us an insight into their day to day activities with an awesome video and gymnastics routine.Foreign language students sang songs to share their learning, and Victoria was officially welcomed on the raft by Mr Barry.

I hope you all had a safe and happy Khmer New Year.

This is a little reminder that ISPP will be celebrating Earth Day on the first day back after the break. Children are encouraged to wear green.
