The Second Semester - Weekly Update 8-12 Jan

It was wonderful to have students back after the winter break. They came back refreshed, relaxed, and ready to learn. I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday.

We got straight back into learning and began our new unit of inquiry into 'Where we are in Place and Time.'
During the unit, learners will inquire into how 'Artifacts help us understand how societies have changed.'

Our lines of inquiry for the unit are:

The different sources we use as evidence.
Evidence of Change over time.
Evidence helps us understand where we live.

We will explore the concepts of:

Change, function, reflection, discovery, history and civilizations.

We worked on understanding what this means through a variety of reading and writing activities.

We began the unit by exploring our central idea and discovering what archaeologists do.

We have also been learning how to use co-ordinates in mathematics. We reinforced this by playing fun math games and activities in class.

We found pieces of broken plates on grids in our classroom and plotted where we found them using our understanding of coordinates. We carefully pieced them back together to recreate our central idea and key concepts. Later in the week, we excavated the school sandpit and carefully plotted our findings on a grid. Both of these activities provided us with an authentic experience to put our mathematical knowledge into practice.

We ended the week by having team time with the other grade 2 students. The teachers had all brought in personal artifacts that had some significance to them. We had to make reasoned guesses about who they belonged to based on the clues provided. Students did really well justifying their answers...

'I think the paint belongs to........ because they like art'
'.......... is from Australia so I think they own the kangaroo'

Puzzling over which teacher owns the vegemite tea-towel!

Examining clues on the soft toy.

Wondering what significance these items had to their owner.

Have a great weekend everybody. Home learning tasks for next week will be sent home on Monday. You can also view a copy under the 'Home Learning' tab at the top of this blog.
