Weekly Update: 21st - 25th August

REMINDERS FOR NEXT WEEK:

  • Students must wear PE kit on Tuesday's and Thursday's
  • Bring your swimming kit on Wednesday
  • Home learning tasks can be found on this blog - under the 'Home Learning Tab'. A copy was also sent home last week. ( last week students shared great examples of math in baking, origami, reading forts, and we even had a beautiful song performed in Chinese!)
  • If you have overdue library books these need to be returned as soon as possible.

We worked really hard on our learning this week.

Literacy:
In literacy, we worked on publishing our biopoems, and reviewed our spelling, high frequency words, and sounds knowledge. We read plenty of books at home and at school...many of the student's opting to make a 'reading fort' for home learning! When we read in class this week, we focussed on effectively retelling the story.

During reading rotations, we worked with the support of Ms Karyn, Ms Yin, Ms Boramey, and Ms Petra. We also independently played language games, and explored Raz Kids.

UOI- Who we are:
We continued to explore growth mindset - the belief that our abilities can be developed over time. We turned fixed mindset statements into growth mindset statements. We also explored why making mistakes is an important part of learning after reading;
'The Girl Who Neve Made Mistakes' - by Mark Pett and Gary Rubinstein.

We talked about what to do when learning gets difficult, and what we can do when we are in the 'learning dip'. These videos helped us understand this better;

UCLA squirrels - The power of perseverance;

DOJO - explores the learning dip.

We revisited the provocation we did during the second week at school. When were we in the learning dip? We reflected on the choices we made when learning got difficult.

We decided that if we are struggling we can do these things to help us;

  • Persevere
  • Try another way
  • Ask for help
  • Work together- collaborate
  • Research
  • Take a small break and go back to it
  • Listen to the mind Master...not the Head Hassler
We looked again at 'Geckos Choice'- a set of strategies we can use to help us effectively solve conflict. Our school councillor - Ms Alison came in and led us through a great writing and drawing activity designed to help us think through how we could use these.

We brainstormed words related to our unit and came up with a fabulous vocabulary list.

PE
We have been reflecting on how a variety of exercises make us feel. We set up our PE essential agreement and have loved trying new exercises - including yoga!

BUDDIES:
This year we are buddy classes with Mr Garret's grade 5 class. We plan to meet once a fortnight. This week we got together and found out more about one-another by completing a 'Find someone who...' scavenger hunt.

We shared our selfie books with our buddies, read together, and snapped pictures on our seesaw accounts.

GARDENING:
During our community development time, we went and helped Mr Ben prepare the school garden for planting. We pulled out the weeds, dug and raked the soil, collected seeds, dug tranches, and planted ochre and bok choy. We can't wait to watch our garden grow over the next few months! This is a build up into our next unit - 'How The World Works' which is focussed around how plants grow.
