We have been continuing our learning in the lab by using coding to create our own games. Using a programme called Scratch, we are making our own 'Pong' game. In this game we use a ball and paddle. The objective is to keep the ball from hitting the ground. There has been a lot of learning involved. We have had to write step by step instructions (code) so that the computer knows what to do. Here is a brief explanation of what coding is. We have one final step before we complete out games and play them next Wednesday. Then we will share our games with you! Thanks Mr Matt the IT guru for all of his hard work guiding us through.
In our next unit, we will use Minecraft as a simulation tool to demonstrate the challenges and opportunities we face when growing, buying and selling food. This is a great unit where groups work together to buy seeds or animals, plant and care for them and then resell for profit. Children aim to develop a sustainable community in which they have enough food and money to eat and survive. It connects brilliantly to our new unit and really allows the children to make great connections.
This week we had an introduction session to Minecraft with our Grade 5 buddies. They helped us learn how to use the basic game controls and shared some of their learning and knowledge with us.
