Getting into our Unit

This week we have investigated our unit further.

In reading we explored a variety of texts informing us about the production and distribution of food.

We are learning to understand key vocabulary in the unit and summarise our findings in our own words - drawing out key information and ideas.

We work in flexible groups and participate in a variety of activities throughout the week designed to build our capabilities and readers and inquirers.

We continued to explore our initial inquiry questions and shared our understandings with others on our unit wall. They were encoraged to keep notes in any form...on paper or in a google doc.

Here is a student example.

My Question: By Chris
Why and how do  they grow square watermelons?

My notes:
Square watermelons grow in Japan. Called cube melon.

Japanese people made square watermelons. They grow square watermelons by putting a box over the watermelon plant as it grows. It has a hole in it so they can water it. It has to be clear so the sun can shine on it.
They do it so it is easier to stack.

Learning to Listen: We reviewed how to listen for key information wen we watch videos or have guest speakers. Ms Rachel came in and reminded us how to take effective notes. We practiced with a 'virtual' guest speaker Jaime Oliver as we listened for important information in one of his food revolution clips.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to have Kristina from FAO visit as a guest speaker. She explained the food value chart to us and identified some of the problems that can occur in food production.

Buddies: We love spending time with our buddies every week. This week we enjoyed learning origami together.

In mathematics we continued learning to read, interpret, and record information in statistics. in these pictures we are sorting sweets according to colour, graphing them and interpreting the data.

As a follow up from our super cycling man visit, we created our own superheroes and wrote poems describing how 'we could be a hero' in our own small way.

We also completed our taste poems. Feel free to come in and read them.
