We have started our How We Organize Ourselves unit. The Central Idea is:
"Humans prepare and respond to changes in the Earth."
If either yourself or someone you know has any experience with working for organizations who do this type of work or you have personally experienced an Earthquake, Landslide, Volcano or Tsunami and would like to be a guest speaker in our class please let me know. Students love the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and can learn so much from them.

Unit of Inquiry
We had two provocations this week. A provocation is an activity especially designed to get students thinking, feeling, and wondering about the unit. On Monday, students returned from language class to discover their classroom had been destroyed...we simulated the aftermath of an earthquake. Teachers did not interfere..we simply observed how students reacted.
The class were amazing! They quickly communicated and began to take action. Afterwards we reflected on how we felt. We generated questions and discussed how organisations and people might react in real situations is disasters.
On Wednesday...we moved around four classes where we we looked at images and videos about Tsunamis, volcanoes, erosion, and earthquakes. We were encouraged to focus on 'how the earth was changing'. We recorded what we noticed and questions we had.
We concluded our last unit by completing unit reflections. We posted these on seesaw. We also read our books to the kindergarten students. We practiced what a good 'read aloud' sounds like before we went. It was great to share our learning with others.
We also checked our grade 2 gardens. The sweetcorn is taller than Ms Karyn now, and the ochre and bok choy are ready to pick!

Literacy
In reading, we have been working on our personal goals. We have been self selecting books that best suit our learning needs and interests and have been reflecting carefully on our progress and next steps. This week in writing, we wrote personal recounts about our water festival breaks.
