Math and Machines!

We finished our focus on addition and subtraction strategies. These will be reviewed regularly throughout the course of the semester. Here are a few examples highlighting some of the ways students tackle problems in mathematics.

Modelling using a place value chart.
Modelling 'the vertical way'

Modelling using the arrow way.

Modelling using a strip diagram

We have now moved on to exploring the concept of mutliplication. This is a new concept that is introduced at grade 2. While many children have already learned some of their times-tables by rote learning, it is important that children understand the foundations of multiplication to enable them to competently and confidently deal with problems.
You may find thse information sheets from Eureka math useful to help understand the way in which we introduce this.

This week we explored what multiplication is. We looked at arrays and found examples of these in the world around us. Here is a student example of their google doc demonstrating their understanding of this.
As part of our unit of inquiry we completed our google slides presentations on one of our scientific investigations. There is an example below.

The other examples are students solutions on the app 'Contraption Maker'. They were given simple problems to solve and needed to apply their knowledge of simple machines and scientific principles to solve them.
