I greatly appreciated the support from you as parents when school was unexpectedly closed on Monday! I am aware that many of you were juggling work and 'home schooling' your children...and I was very impressed with the amount of you who still managed to find time to contact me. Thank You! This was an unforeseen event, and school have worked hard on fine-tuning our procedures, so in the event that it ever happens again our communication should be top notch, and the student workload should be manageable.
Despite the fact that it was a short school week, we still managed to cram in plenty of learning! In literacy we have been focusing on the features of a personal recount. We are looking at the process of writing and have been establishing a plan to guide us through our work.
In Mathematics we continued looking at how to partition numbers in to tens and ones to aid us when we add and subtract. Children have various strategies now to deal with adding 2 digit numbers. We also looked at our number knowledge...recording 'everything we knew' about any given number.
Several children this week brought books from home to school and asked if they could read in their home language to the class. It is wonderful to see these children so proudly sharing stories they love in multiple languages. They shared part of the book in their mother tongue, and then explained the stories orally in English! Last week we heard stories in Swedish, Danish, German, and Hindi. If your child would like to share a story in their home language, we would love to hear it!
As part of our literacy and inquiry programme, we looked at how to generate effective questions. Mr Jon and Ms Mom, led us through an activity where we had to write the appropriate question when we were only given the answer! We then generated our own questions for our unit of inquiry. Next week we will select the best of our questions to provide the basis for our personal inquiry.
We watered and watched our 'rice heads' to see how much hair they sprouted over the week. I wonder if any of them will need haircuts on Monday? We made these with our buddies Thursday week ago and have thoroughly enjoyed the process!
